HISTORY OF RASCAFRÍA

This village, located in Lozoya valley, maintains a traditional architecture typical from Guadarrama Mountains. The Peñalara Natural Reserve and the Giner de los Ríos Arboretum are also part of this municipal district. One of the most spectacular monuments in Rascafría is El Paular Monastery, which is also one of the most important buildings in Madrid.

The origin of the village dates back from the Middle Age and it is linked to the repopulation of the mountain range, carried out by inhabitants of Segovia. The Charterhouse of El Paular was built in the 16th century, at the foot of the Peñalara massif, among pinewoods and oak woods. The old palaces, John I’s hunting lodges and the surrounding territory were donated to the Carthusian Order.

We preserve very few documents about this place from the 16th to the 17th century. The only special buildings from that time that remain standing are the Iglesia Parroquial de San Andrés and La Casona, a residential complex with a garden and a vegetable garden.

In the 18th century, 1751 to be exact, Rascafría was inhabited by 206 neighbours. Its economy was focused on stockbreeding, irrigated crops, fruit trees and some wheat, rye and flax. The village had two waterwheels, a tavern, a butcher’s shop, a restaurant and a hospital for temporary residents. After the provincial restoration, carried out in 1833, Rascafría became part of the province of Madrid.

(Arboreto Giner de los Ríos).
